The Unicorn Kings
I first met Holly through her brother. Her brother and I had a mutual friend. I was looking for a back-up story for Colt the Armadillo and was told that this friend of a friend's sister may have a story that could work. I went over there and instead of finding a back-up story, I instead found a story that needed it's own comic book. Holly was a junior in high school at the time, but her artwork and more importantly her story were years ahead of her age. She had a true gift for storytelling and an anime influenced artwork that fit the story. But even more impressive than the artwork and the story was her passion. Listening to her tell the story of the world of Verne and the Unicorn Kings was what it must have been like to hear the Greeks tell of the tales of the Hercules and Ulysses. She did not create the world of Verne, she breathed life into it. It was so refreshing to find someone who was so passionate about their work and a story that did not involve heroes with huge bulging muscles. It really was a comic for all ages. While Holly never went to any of the shows with us, she did have her high school (which was also my former high school, Midpark) set up a booth for her to sell her comics from. I went there one day with her and she had an opportunity to showcase her book to the fellow students and sign some autographs. One of my biggest regrets when it came to KZ Comics was that the company went under before Holly could finish her story. She had it all laid out for issues to come and I really feel if it kept going, it would have done quite well. The orders were quite respectable on it. It broke my heart to tell her that the company was going out of business and there would only be one issue of Unicorn Kings. I only saw her one time after the company folded. She had just been accepted into an art college and stopped by my comic store. She brought a portfolio along and showed me her latest artwork. Her talent had grown and she really was an very good artist. I do not know if she followed her dream and became an artist, but I hope so. She had the talent to go as far as she wanted to.
